The museum has many wonderful exhibits on Peterboro’s past history and people. Dispersed throughout are the stories of individuals who were born enslaved, others who were born free, those who remained and some who moved on. Additional displays include the Madison County Home for Destitute Children, Peterboro Glass, Early Businesses, Elizabeth Miller’s Dress Reform, and Gerrit Smith Miller’s contributions to soccer and the Holstein Friesian cattle industry.
The museum also has an extensive genealogical collection for families with a connection to the Town of Smithfield, which includes Peterboro, Siloam and the surrounding area.
The Peterboro Area Museum is located in the former
schoolhouse of the
Madison County Home for Destitute Children.
The larger building was razed in 1938.
